The KONE side table was designed by Roger McLay and was launched in 1953.
McLay is also the designer of the now iconic and better know Kone chair. This table offered for sale has the original makers mark sticker identifying it as an authentic KONE table by Roger McLay.
This table is a rare mid-century Australian piece and another the same is apparently held in the NGV Modern design collection.
Taking inspiration from Charles & Ray Eames and other mid-century furniture designers, he used moulded plywood as the base material as it was readily available in the post war period. He made a simple construction by forming a shallow cone shape with a hole in the centre from a single sheet of moulded aviation plywood and secured the join with brass pins. The timber cone form supports a glass tabletop and sits on a circular base & 4 legs made of powder coated 14mm steel rod.
