Antique Carved Oak Spinning Chair with Grapevine Detail

A beautifully unusual antique spinning chair, crafted from oak and richly detailed with hand-carved grapevine motifs.

The extraordinary elongated back is the defining feature, rising dramatically from the seat before finishing in an oversized pierced scroll. Deeply carved bunches of grapes and trailing vine leaves run the length of the backrest against a textured ground, giving the chair an almost sculptural presence.

The shaped timber seat is equally detailed, with geometric and foliate carving worked directly into the surface, while gently curved legs soften the otherwise graphic silhouette.

Dating in style to the late Victorian period, spinning chairs were traditionally compact occasional chairs characterised by their narrow proportions, carved timber construction and decorative backs. Comparable examples are commonly attributed to Britain in the late 19th century, although without provenance or a maker's mark we would leave the exact origin and date of this particular chair unattributed.

More object than ordinary occasional chair, its exaggerated proportions and folk-art quality make it particularly compelling in a contemporary setting — styled alone in an entry, beside a bed or simply as a decorative statement piece.
