Cassina Folding Dining Table by Afra & Tobia Scarpa | Italy, c.1970s

An iconic example of Italian modernism, this folding dining table was designed by Afra & Tobia Scarpa for Cassina in the late 1960s/early 1970s. Celebrated for their architectural approach to furniture, the Scarpas combined sculptural simplicity with ingenious functionality, creating pieces that remain among the most sought-after designs of the twentieth century. The folding dining table is one of their most elegant and practical works, showcasing their signature balance of precision engineering and warm natural materials.

Crafted in oak with a beautifully figured veneer top, the table features broad architectural legs, softly radiused edges and a cleverly concealed butterfly-fold extension. Closed, it presents as a clean-lined rectangular dining table; with a simple movement, the hinged top unfolds to reveal a generous entertaining surface, comfortably seating up to ten guests.

The oak has mellowed over decades to a rich honey tone, highlighting the exceptional quality of the timber and craftsmanship for which Cassina is internationally renowned.

Condition

Presented in very good vintage condition with age-appropriate wear consistent with careful use.

• One fine surface scratch approximately 20cm long with slight colour transfer.
• Three deeper darker scratches to the tabletop.
• Fine surface scratches visible under certain light, typical of vintage use.
• General wear to the tabletop edges where arms naturally rest.
• General wear to the feet and lower legs.
• Small neon pink paint spots to the underside of the folding extension, only visible when the extension leaf is raised.
• Minor scratches to the internal sliding arms from operation of the extension mechanism, concealed during normal use.

The table is structurally excellent, the extension mechanism operates smoothly, and all noted wear is cosmetic only, presenting beautifully overall.
